‘This is America’ Childish Gambino’s Reflection of The Times.
The incomparable Nina Simone once said, “An artist’s duty, as far as I am concerned, is to reflect the times” and that could not be more apparent than in Donald Glover’s (Childish Gambino) new video This is America.
Saturday, May 5th after hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live, the multifaceted Childish Gambino released the visuals for his song This is America. Within hours of it’s release This is America generated millions of views on YouTube and left everyone with their own interpretation.
Gambino enlisted filmmaker Hiro Murai as Director. The duo has worked closely over the years, notably on the hit FX Television show Atlanta. Throughout the video we see Gambino dancing in a jubilant manner through various scenes mirroring the current state of America. Each scene puts a spotlight on tragedy, mass shootings, gun control, Hip-Hop and how we as a people find happiness in the midst of it all. In addition, the symbolism in This is America highlights how we use social media, music, and dance to distract us from the issues that continue to plague the world. Either way This is America sparks a necessary dialogue.
This is America is breathtaking, ominous, joyous and an overall brilliant depiction of life in the U.S. Gambino and Murai were brutally honest in their vision and therefore, adding them to the list of creative’s that continue to use their voice to reflect the times.
